The U.S. Navy seeks to commercialize U.S. Patent 6,904,861 (Boat Capture System).
Background
Current boat trailer configurations are problematic for loading a boat onto a trailer even under calm conditions. The movement of the boat and the low speed required to line up the approach reduce the level of control over the boat, thereby making the loading process much more difficult. Frustrated boaters and long lines at boat load/unload ramps are common, and show a serious market need for a simpler, less labor-intensive, trailer-loading solution. Damage to the trailer and/or boat, especially for the novice boater, is common during the loading process.
The Technology
SSC Pacific’s Boat Capture System is a solution for loading a boat onto a trailer under substantial power in calm or rough water. The system has been successfully field-tested by the Navy SEALs. Utilizing guide posts, an expandable and retractable harness, and an automatic latch and release system, this technology makes loading a boat onto a trailer a hassle-free, automated process. The guideposts direct the boat onto the trailer, while an elastic harness grabs the automatic latch system and stops the boat, even under substantial power in rough water, firmly landing and securing the boat to the trailer. The winch lanyard may then be attached to further secure the vessel.
