Atmospheric Effects Assessment Technology

The goal of our technology program is to provide tactical environmental information to both the operational decision maker and the systems developer. Both must meet increased demands with less resources. Proper consideration of the effects of the operational environment and exploitation and mitigation of environmental phenomena is a cost-effective approach to maximize use of existing systems, and to optimize design of future weapon and sensor systems.

The primary environmental effects addressed in this technology area deal with propagation of radiowave frequencies (RF) and electrooptical (EO) energy. For the operational decision maker, the goal is to embed environmental information into the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) structure. Without having to specify or even know the source of environmental input data, the operational decision maker must be able to overlay environmental data and their effects on tactical displays and incorporate them into tactical decision aids (TDAs). 

For the designer of future sensor and weapon systems, the goal is to provide personal computer software packages which contain propagation models, environmental data bases, and suitable displays allowing visualization and simulation of environmental effects for systems under consideration.

The technical thrusts of this technology are modeling and measurement of radio/radar and EO propagation, sensing of the propagation environment, sensitivity analyses and performance simulations. Emphasis is on coastal environments for which propagation conditions are often highly variable both in space and time.
