How to collect the output data from the Marwin Rawinsonde MW12 on a personal computer The instructions described here are for the fleet standard configuration MW12 set and an IBM compatible PC using the Terminal program that comes with the Windows 3.1 operating system. Any PC terminal emulator program (such as ProComm) will work however. There are four steps to the connection process. These are: 1. Connect the MW12 to a comm port on the PC. 2. Obtain the printer configuration parameters from the MW12. 3. Setup the terminal emulator program. 4. Turn on and normally operate the MW12. The following is a detailed discussion for each of the four steps. Step 1. Connect the Marwin Rawinsonde Set MW12 to a PC. a. Plug the round end of the Kodak Diconix 150 Plus Printer cable into the S2 connection on the MW12. b. Using gender changes, adapters, etc. (or make your own cable), connect the other end of the printer cable to either the comm1 or comm2 connection on the PC c. This connection should function normally. If you are not seeing the data display from step 4a below, you may have to switch pins 2 and 3 within the cable. Any ET or DT should be able to change the pin connections or construct a new cable for this specific use. All pin connections are defined in the MW11 & MW12 User’s Guide. Both connectors (the one for the MW12 and the one for the PC are widely available through the navy supply system or from an outlet such as Radio Shack. Step 2. Determine the printer settings for the MW12. This step needs to be done only once unless you change the printer setting of the MW12. a. Turn on the power b. When the display comes up, press the CMND key. c. Press the C1 key, SYSGEN d. Press the C5 key, GoOn e. Press the C1 key, Exit f. Press the C5 key, List g. Press the C2 key, Config. A Configuration listing will be displayed. Ours at NRaD looks like this: SYSPAR Rev. 05.07N 97-02-04 22:54:19 Initialized: 93-11-12 12:00:00 Latest modification: 95-09-05 17:42:15 Device Type MW12 Line description MWO MF SWS PTP PRT PRT2 Line status On/Test Off Off Off On Off Cable Number I 3 S 4 S 5X S 5 S 2 S 3 Line speed (bps) 19200 19200 1200 300 1200 1200 Parity None None None None None None Number of data bits 8 8 8 8 8 8 Number of stop bits 1 1 1 1 1 1 Line timeout 10 10 30 10 10 10 Terminal type HCopy HCopy HCopy HCopy EpsonFX EpsonFX XON/XOFF type Off Off Off Off Normal Normal h. Press the C1 key, Exit to return to main menu. j. Turn off the power. Step 3. Prior to starting the MW12 for a balloon launch, start your PC. a. Start your terminal emulator program. You can use ProComm, Terminal for Windows 3.1, or any terminal emulator. The following steps are described for the Terminal program of Windows 3.1. You will have to modify them for other terminal emulator programs. b. For the comm port you have the cable connected to (step 1b above), set the communications settings to match those of the MRS printer, i.e. Line speed 1200; parity - None; data bits - 8; stop bits - 1; etc. These settings are made from the Settings menu item and the Communications windows. c. Put your terminal emulator program into a mode to receive text data. 1) Select the Transfers menu item. 2) Select the Receive text file menu item. 3) Enter a file name when prompted and then press OK. 4) Terminal is now standing-by to receive the data. d. If you are familiar with the terminal program or ProComm, you may write a script to perform the above sets. For future soundings, just execute the script from a batch command. 4. Start and use the Marwin Rawinsonde Set MW12 as normal. a. Turn on the power. You should see the text displayed in the windows of the MW12 echoed on the screen of your PC. If not, see step 1c above. b. When the MW12 sounding is finished, be sure to obtain a list and a temp of the data before turning off the power. The temp will be processed automatically by the RPOT program by opening your data file (named in step 3c above) from the RPOT environmental input window. c. Exit the terminal emulator program on your PC.
