CANES, the Navy's next generation tactical afloat network, represents a new business model for delivering capability to the fleet. Formally known as Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services, CANES consolidates five legacy networks into one, which enhances operational effectiveness and provides better quality of life for deployed Sailors.

"The operating systems that exist today on some of those legacy networks are not sustainable. CANES allows us to bring in current operating systems and then upgrade or stay current with future changes to those operating systems in ways that are more easily adapted or easily implemented than the current structure," explains Rear Adm. Christian Becker, the Navy's Program Executive Officer for C4I. "As we install CANES we create a platform where we can increase our speed to capability, and we can control more effectively our cost of capabilities that ride on top of that platform. And then, of course, that brings with it our ability to defend our capabilities - our cyber security posture - in ways that are more effective both for cost and the mission."

Additional advantages include:

  • A Common Computing Environment with continual hardware and software upgrades
  • Total Ownership Cost reduction, partially achieved through full and open competition throughout the program's lifecycle
  • An adaptable IT platform that can meet rapidly changing warfighting requirements
  • Network standardization and variant reduction (ship-to-ship, scalable for ship class)
  • Government-owned data rights supported by low-risk, proven technology     

    The first CANES installation took place aboard USS McCampbell (DDG 85) in November 2013 and installations on a number of platforms are underway. The network will be deployed to more than 190 ships, submarines and Maritime Operations Centers by 2021.
