STEM Outreach Program Overview

The goal of the SPAWAR Systems Center (SSC) Atlantic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Outreach Program is to collaborate with academia, government organizations, local businesses and professional organizations to increase STEM interest and literacy in our communities, and to provide a pipeline for future STEM talent.

Community Snapshot
Our STEM Outreach is commissioned for operation in Charleston, S.C., Hampton Roads, Va., and New Orleans, La. Each site works with the local school districts, higher education institutes, industry and other groups to implement programs and activities for K-12 students and teachers that will enrich their STEM understanding.

Programs Hosted by All Locations:

Career Fairs
Volunteers engage in STEM dialogue and build relationships with young scholars. The initiative gives elementary, middle and high school students an opportunity to experience SSC Atlantic and STEM careers through hands-on demonstrations and career discussions.

Cyber Security Camps
SSC Atlantic supports multiple Cyber Security events in an effort to promote STEM to students K-12. During these events, students sharpen their skills and promote their learning of cybersecurity through hands-on activities. Cyber events encourage students to think about their college careers by exposing them to various degree programs that fall under the cybersecurity spectrum.

Festivals, Expos and Demonstrations
Mentors promote STEM at local and national events and festivals, providing hands-on learning through STEM related activities and demonstrations. Festivals, expos and demonstrations showcase advanced technologies while exposing students to various career opportunities.

FIRST™ Robotics
Employees serve as mentors, judges, referees, scorekeepers, game controllers and field power controllers in competitions for K-12 students: FIRST LEGO League Jr., FIRST LEGO League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FIRST™ - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology are innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.

"Girls Day Out" Summer Camp
The camp is designed to educate and attract rising 8th and 9th grade girls to pursue STEM careers while developing the total girl. The goal of the camp is to help girls make appropriate curriculum choices in high school that will prepare them for pursuit of a STEM degree. The girls also learn valuable interpersonal skills and techniques, proper etiquette, and attend a job exposition. This informative event connects our future workforce with women working in STEM-related careers with the hope that it will make a difference and impact the girls’ lives.

Internships and Apprenticeships
SSC Atlantic’s STEM summer programs are designed to expose participants to STEM careers, employment and research opportunities through real-world application and hands-on learning. The program fosters critical thinking, collaboration and team work in addition to interaction with STEM professionals and a STEM organization.

Information Technology (IT) Shadow Day
IT Job Shadow Day provides high school students, chosen by the schools, with a unique opportunity to observe the federal IT workforce and to shadow IT professionals, possibly providing the impetus for them to pursue a career in the IT field.

Job Shadow
Job Shadowing is an opportunity to introduce children to SSC Atlantic for a few hours or a full day to expose them to an occupational area of interest. The program provides an up-close look at how skills learned in school are applied in the workplace. Host employees who act as a positive role models impact young people’s lives by helping students understand the world of work and help provide them with a positive experience, while at the same time attracting future employees.

School Tours
The goal of school tours is to provide students insight into STEM career fields, promote interest in such fields and raise awareness of the need for qualified STEM professionals. SSC Atlantic invites middle, high school, and university students and their educators to visit the command to see first-hand real world examples of STEM careers.

Science Fairs
Employees participate as judges at the various science fairs throughout each local area. Science fairs include students in elementary, middle and high schools. Students share and present their ideas and report the results. Science fairs motivate students with science and contribute to their social development.
