Mr. Mark J. Sakowski
Chief of Staff, NAVELSG
A native of Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, Mr. Sakowski was commissioned as a Navy Supply Corps Officer in May 1981 through the NROTC program at the University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After attending the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia, he was assigned on USS Briscoe (DD 977), based in Norfolk, Virginia.
In 1983, he was assigned as Supply Officer of the VF-142 "Ghostriders," an F-14 fighter squadron based at Oceana, Virginia. During this tour he deployed on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). In July of 1984, he returned to the Navy Supply Corps School for duty as an instructor, where he also earned his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Brenau University in Gainesville, GA.
In 1987, Mr. Sakowski was employed as a logistics analyst at the Logistics Management Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1988, he returned to active duty and was assigned as a Fleet Support Readiness Briefer and Aviation Integrated Logistics Support Analyst at the Naval Supply Systems Command in Washington, DC. He transferred to San Diego, California in 1992 as the Logistics Officer at the Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region NINETEEN.
In 1994, he returned to sea duty as the Assistant Supply Officer of USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), based in Alameda, California, where he was awarded the RADM Maurice K. Bresnahan Junior Officer Leadership award in 1995. In April of 1996, he reported as the Executive Officer of Naval Reserve Cargo Handling Training Battalion (NRCHTB). He assumed command of the Battalion in June 1997, and then assumed command of the Navy Cargo Handling & Port Group (NAVCHAPGRU), now called NCHB-1, upon its merger with NRCHTB in April 1998.
In 2000, he reported to the Commanding General's Staff at Marine Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. He deployed for six months to Marine Central Command (MARCENT) in Bahrain for the opening operations of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In May 2003, he reported as the Deputy Commander of Naval Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG)), and directed the mobilization of over 6000 Naval Reservists during OEF/OIF. In 2004, he attended the Executive Training Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
He retired from the Navy as a Captain in June of 2008, after 27 years of Naval Service. Mr. Sakowski joined the Federal Service in September 2008, as the Chief of Staff (COS) and senior civilian at the Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, Williamsburg, VA. As the Chief of Staff he directs an echelon IV headquarters staff responsible for the organizing, training, equipping, and deployment of a force of over 3600 Navy “Cargo Handlers”, comprised of five Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiments (NELR), and 11 Navy Cargo Handling Battalions (NCHB).
