Master Chief Michael Wentzel

was born in Olongapo, Philippines and raised in Oceanside, California where he graduated from El Camino High School in 1988.

In 1989, he enlisted in the Sea Air Mariner Program, attended recruit training and Hospital Corpsman “A” school in Great Lakes, Illinois and reported to Naval Reserve Hospital Unit 119 in San Diego, California as a drilling reservist. He was recalled to active duty in June 1990 as a Hospitalman Recruit and reported to USS ROBISON (DDG 12) in San Diego. He then graduated from Pharmacy Technician “C” School in San Diego and reported to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. In 1994, he reenlisted and converted to the Training and Administration of Reserves Program, attended Field Medical Service School Camp Pendleton, and reported to Inspector-Instructor Staff, 4th Landing Support Battalion, Company B, in Lathrop, California. During his tour with 4th Medical Logistics Company, Detachment 1, San Diego, he was selected to attend Surface Force Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) School where he graduated with honors in May 2001. His IDC tours include Naval Ambulatory Care Center New Orleans and USS RODNEY M DAVIS (FFG 60) in Everett, Washington. In 2004, he was selected to serve as the Full Time Support Hospital Corpsman Detailer in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following evacuation from Hurricane Katrina, he continued his detailer tour at Navy Personnel Command (NPC) in Millington, Tennessee until March 2008. During his tour as Senior Enlisted Advisor of the Reserve Line of Duty, Medical Retention Review, and Medical Hold Branch at NPC, he volunteered for Individual Augmentee (IA) orders.

During his IA in 2011 with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines to Sangin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan he was selected for the Command Senior Chief Program, received the 2010 NPC Senior Enlisted Leadership Award, and selected for advancement to Master Chief Petty Officer.

Master Chief is a graduate of Senior Enlisted Academy Class 165 and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course Class 100 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Master Chief Wentzel’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (eight awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Army Achievement Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various unit and campaign awards. He is qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist.

Master Chief Wentzel reported as Command Master Chief of Maritime Expeditionary Security Group ONE in May 2012.
