  EXECUTIVE OFFICER

COMMANDER GREGORY A. MEYER

UNITED STATES NAVY

 

Commander Gregory A. Meyer was born in San Diego, California but is a native of Flanders, New Jersey.  He is a 1995 graduate of the United States Naval Academy.

                His first at-sea assignment was as Strike Officer on USS CUSHING (DD-985) homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.  During this assignment, he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in the Spring of 2000.  Following advanced engineering training in Newport, Rhode Island, Commander Meyer returned to Yokosuka, Japan as the Main Propulsion Assistant onboard USS GARY (FFG-51).  He deployed with the KITTY HAWK Battle Group in Spring of 2001.

                Following the completion of his 3-year sea duty as a part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces, Commander Meyer was assigned to the Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, Rhode Island as a Division Officers Course Instructor.  There he was in charge of Class 173, the Sea Sparrow and Harpoon Billet Specialty Training courses, and earned his Master Training Specialist certificate.

                Commander Meyer completed Department Head training in 2003, and reported to USS MAHAN (DDG-72) as the Engineer Officer.  During this tour he conducted surge operations with the Standing Naval Forces Mediterranean and served as the Ship’s Maintenance Material Officer.

                Although under orders to another command, Commander Meyer was hand-selected to assume duties as the Engineer Officer onboard USS LEYTE GULF (CG-55).  This challenging tour was highlighted by a successful Board of Inspection and Survey, deployment to the Arabian Gulf, and culminated in the ship receiving the Battle Efficiency Award for Engineering.

                Following his Department Head tours Commander Meyer attended the Army Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas.  This school prepared him well for his follow-on joint assignment to the 18th Airborne Corps in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  Shortly after reporting to Fort Bragg Commander Meyer deployed with the rest of the Corps to Baghdad where they assumed the duties as the Multi-National Corps-Iraq.  He spent 15-months in Iraq working as a Battle Major and the Current Operations Fusion Cell Chief.

                In January 2010 Commander Meyer again deployed with 18th Airborne Corps, this time as part of the Assault Command Post supporting OPERATION UNIFIED RESPONSE following the earthquake in Haiti.  He spent 2-months in Haiti working as a 1-man Fusion Cell with multiple governmental and non-governmental organizations.

                Commander Meyer's was most recently the Current Operations Chief and lead Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief Planner for the Commander SEVENTH Fleet.  There he directly participated in OPERATION TOMODACHI following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011.

                Ashore Commander Meyer has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering, a Masters of Business Administration, and Phase I Joint Professional Military Education.

                His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy/Marine Commendation Medals, three Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various campaign and unit awards.  He is married to the former Kathryn O’Cain of Charleston, South Carolina and has one son Ethan born in 2006.  They reside in San Diego, California.
