Commander McAlister assumed command of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion SEVENTY-FOUR in July 2012. He previously attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI.
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Commander McAlister was commissioned in 1995 through Officer Candidate School upon graduation from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelors and Masters of Science in Civil Engineering. He earned a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 2012.
Commander McAlisters early assignments include the Public Works Department in Adak, Alaska; Alfa Company/Training Department of Amphibious Construction Battalion TWO; Officer in Charge of Construction Battalion Unit 402; and Assistant Public Works Officer for Navy Region Hawaii. In 2001, he became Aide to the Commander, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific Division/THIRD Naval Construction Brigade and subsequently a plankowner of FIRST Naval Construction Division.
Commander McAlister forward deployed to Southwest Asia in 2002-2003 and served as Future Operations Officer for I Marine Expeditionary Force Engineer Group (MEG) during combat operations. In 2003, he was assigned to the White House Military Office as a Program Manager. Commander McAlister reported as Operations Officer for Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE in 2005 and completed deployments to Iraq as Commander of Task Force Sierra in direct support of multiple Joint Special Operations Task Forces and to Kuwait in direct support of Coalition Forces Land Component Command.
In June 2007, he assumed the duties as Operations Officer for THIRTIETH Naval Construction Regiment with oversight of tactical and construction operations in the Pacific Theater and in direct support of Multi National Force-West throughout Iraqs Al Anbar Province. Commander McAlister then served as the Military Construction (MILCON) Program Manager from 2008 to 2011 for Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Fleet Readiness and Logistics), Shore Readiness Division (OPNAV N46) and Commander, Naval Installations Command (CNIC).
Commander McAlister is qualified as a Seabee Combat Warfare and Fleet Marine Force Officer, a Professional Engineer in the state of Hawaii, a member of the Defense Acquisition Professional Community, and a LEED Accredited Professional. He is certified as Joint Qualification Level II, Contracting Level III and Facilities Engineering Level II. His personal decorations include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medals, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medals and various unit and campaign awards.
