Commander Smith reported to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 28, Shreveport, LA, as the Commanding Officer in November 2011.
Curtis Smith was born and raised in Portland, OR. He enlisted in the Navy in 1982 and served in the submarine force as a nuclear electronics technician before being honorably discharged in 1988. As a drilling reservist he pursued and received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1993 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the Civil Engineer Corps in 1996.
His Civil Engineer Corps duty assignments include a tour with NMCB 17 in Fort Carson, CO, where he served as the Phoenix detachment OIC, Communication Officer, and Company Commander from 1996 through 2001. He was then assigned to the 30th Naval Construction Regiment as the Embarkation and Liaison Naval Officer in 2002 before transferring to NMCB 28 and deploying in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving as the Administration Officer, Training Officer, and Communications Officer.
His next duty assignment was with the 31st Seabee Readiness Group (SRG) as an Expeditionary Training Support Officer in 2004. He then served with Naval Engineering Forces Korea from 2005 through 2008 as the Current Operations Officer. He mobilized as an Individual Augment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in October of 2008 with the Army Corps of Engineers in Ramadi, Iraq serving as the Resident Office OIC. Upon return, he was assigned to Naval Facilities Expeditionary Logistics Center (NFELC) surge unit as the Assistant Operations Officer serving through August of 2010. In September of 2010 CDR Smith reported aboard NMCB 22 in Fort Worth, TX, as the Executive Officer.
In his civilian occupation, he is an Engineering Group Leader for Intel Corporation providing manufacturing engineering support for a semiconductor chip fabrication facility in Chandler, AZ. He holds a masters degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University and serves as a Boy Scout Assistant Scoutmaster for a local troop. His military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other service decorations.
CDR Smith is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Arizona.
