John Adams, a Virginia native, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI) with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1986. Commander Adams went on to complete his Masters Degree in Construction Management from VPI in 1987.
Commander Adams began his military career by enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserves as a combat engineer in 1982 after graduating from high school. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant (E-5) in 1988. He joined the Civil Engineer Corps through the Direct Commission program in November 1993.
CDR Adams first assignment was to Naval Construction Battalion TWENTY-THREE where he held the positions of AOIC, OIC and Echo Company Commander. In 1998 he was assigned to the Public Works Department in Rota Spain. In 2002 he reported to NAVFAC Contingency Engineering Unit where he held the position of the Administrative Officer. He was mobilized to Iraq during his tour with OICC in March 2004 in support to OIF I and was the LNO between the OICC and Marine Engineering Group(MEG). Upon his return he was assigned to Operations Office of the First Naval Construction Division(1NCD) where he worked as the Reserve Operations Officer. In 2006, he was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion TWENTY-ONE, Lakehurst NJ, as the Executive Officer. In 2008, he was assigned to the Naval Reserve Contingency Engineering Management for EUCOM as the Operations Officer. He was mobilized to Kuwait in July 2009 in support of Operation Noble Eagle where he worked as a Facility Planner. He is currently on a one year ADSW in support of 1NCD Pacific to assist in the preparation and development of OPLANs.
Commander Adams is Seabee Combat Warfare qualified and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia. His awards include Navy Commendation Medal(2), Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement(2), Global War on Terrorism(1), Fleet Marine Force Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service(2), Joint Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation(2), Overseas Ribbon(2), Good Conduct, Armed Forces Reserve, Pistol(Expert), M-16(Expert) In civilian life, Commander Adams is currently working as the NAVFAC MIDLANT Capital Improvement Business and Program Manager, CI3 in Norfolk, VA. He has worked with government for 25 years as a designer, Construction Manager, Project Manager and General Manager.
