Senior Chief Petty Officer Derek A. Scheil is a native of Fairmont, NE. While in High School, he was a tri-sport athlete, four year honor roll member, and recipient of multiple academic and athletic state awards. He entered the U.S. Navy by attending Basic Training in Great Lakes, Illinois, in July 1999. Senior Chief Scheil attended both Cryptologic Technician Technical and Electronic Warfare Technician “A” Schools at the Naval Technical Training Command in Pensacola, Florida. His first duty assignment was onboard USS HUE CITY (CG-66) where he served as the OW Division Work Center Supervisor. During this tour he deployed to the 5th and 6th Fleet Area of Operations (AOR), selected as BJOY, advanced to Petty Officer Second Class, and qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
In August 2004, he reported to NSA/CSS Hawaii for duty in HS2J Weapons and Space. During that tour he held various positions, including department Leading Petty Officer (LPO), Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the PACOM J2 All-Source Watch, Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) Liaison Officer at the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Pacific, and was advanced to Petty Officer First Class.
In October 2007, Senior Chief Scheil transferred to NIOC Hawaii for service in Surface Direct Support. He deployed onboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) to the 7th Fleet AOR as the Cryptologic Direct Support Element LPO. During this deployment he qualified as an Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist. Mid tour he was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer and was internally reassigned to the Information Operations Division where he was responsible for Non-Kinetic Targeting, Commander Task Force 519 Information Operations Planning, and qualified as an Enlisted Information Dominance Warfare Specialist. Also, during this tour he was selected for an Individual Augmentee assignment to Iraq as part of Special Operations Task Force – West conducting SIGINT Geospatial Analysis for Direct Actions while qualifying as an Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist.
Senior Chief internally transferred to Subsurface Direct Support in March 2012 and conducted 11 missions in the 7th Fleet AOR while qualifying in Submarines. At the end of his tour he was selected for advancement to Senior Chief Petty Officer. His current assignment is at Tactical Training Group Atlantic as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader and Intelligence/Information Operations Department Leading Chief Petty Officer.
Senior Chief Scheil is authorized to wear the Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards), Good Conduct (5 awards), and several campaign and unit awards.
