
Mr. Robert P. Strait
Commander Bob Strait, retired, is a 1980 graduate of the University of Maryland. After gaining his commission through Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI in May 1981, he served as Admin Officer/Assistant Operations Officer onboard USS ROBERT A OWENS (DD-827). Following graduation from Surface Warfare Officers School (Basic) he reported to USS MANLEY (DD-940) as Machinery Officer with a subsequent tour as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, USS EDSON (DD-946).
He then taught Naval Science at Massachusetts Maritime Academy from March 1985 to July 1987, during which time he earned a Master of Science degree in Applied Management from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Upon completion of Surface Warfare Officers’ School (Department Head) in March 1988, Cdr Strait reported to USS TATNALL (DDG-19) as Operations Officer with a subsequent tour as Operations Officer in USS VIRGINIA (CGN-38) where he participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After completing Joint Military Professional Education at the Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in May 1992, he was assigned as the Director of Automated Data Processing Security at United States Atlantic Command in Norfolk, VA. Cdr Strait returned to sea duty as Executive Officer onboard USS MONONGAHELA (AO-178) in August 1994. From December 1995 to June 1999 he served as Command Duty Officer and subsequently Director of Command Center Operations for the United States Atlantic Fleet.
Commander Strait retired from active duty in October 2003 and is currently the Command Information Officer, Director of Operations Analysis, and Senior Scheduler for the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey.
His awards include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal and various service, campaign, and unit awards.
