Captain John A. Okon, a native of Syracuse, NY, graduated from the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler with a Bachelor of Science in meteorology and oceanography, a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Third Mate License, and was commissioned an Ensign in May 1991.

After completing basic Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, R.I., he reported aboard USS Ticonderoga (CG 47) where he served as First Lieutenant, Administrative Officer and Navigator from December 1991 to January 1995. He deployed with the Eisenhower Battle Group to the Arabian Gulf and Norwegian Sea in support of Operation Desert Storm and Team Work ’92, and to the Caribbean Sea in support of counter-drug operations. 

In January 1995, he was designated an Oceanography Officer, and reported to Naval Atlantic Meteorology and Oceanography Center. While there, he qualified as Forecaster and Optimum Track Ship Router and served as Meteorology and Oceanography Services Officer. In August of 1997, CAPT Okon was selected as Aide/Executive Assistant to Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command.

He attended Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif., from December 2000 to March 2003, where he earned a Master of Science in meteorology and physical oceanography.

In July 2003, CAPT Okon returned to sea as Oceanographer onboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. He qualified as Officer of the Deck (OOD) and Command Duty Officer – underway, and served as Sea and Anchor and Special Evolutions OOD and Assistant Senior Watch Officer.

In February 2006, CAPT Okon entered the College of Naval Warfare, Naval War College, Newport, where he earned a Master of Arts in national security studies.  In March 2007 he reported to the Joint Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Operations Directorate, Deputy Director for Regional Operations. He served as Operations Officer for counter drug/counter-narcotic terrorism and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, U.S. Southern Command Division, Executive Officer and Executive Assistant to Deputy Director for Regional Operations.  Following this assignment, CAPT Okon assumed command of Naval Oceanography Antisubmarine Warfare Center, Yokosuka, Japan in September 2009.

In July 2011, CAPT Okon reported to Navy Personnel Command where he served as Senior Oceanography Assignments and Placement Officer (Pers-475) until July 2013.

CAPT Okon’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal and various service, unit and campaign awards.
