Lieutenant Commander Michael J. Herlands, a native of Annandale, Virginia, received his commission from the United States Naval Academy May 24th, 2000. His first assignment as a Navy Cryptologist was in Naval Security Group Activity Fort Meade, MD where he was a Real Time Military Analysis Center watch officer. LCDR Herlands' subsequent assignments include Director of Technology Demonstrations, Commander Naval Security Group, Fort Meade MD; Student, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey CA; Ships Signals Exploitation Space Division Officer, USS KEARSARGE, Norfolk Virginia; Director of Cyber Assessments and Analysis, Navy Information Operations Command Norfolk, Norfolk VA; and Cryptologic Resource Coordinator, Expeditionary Strike Group Five, Bahrain.
LCDR Herlands earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. His other academic accomplishments include Joint Professional Military Education Phase I through the Naval War College and Joint Professional Military Education Phase II through the Joint Forces Staff College.
LCDR Herlands' decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, three Navy Achievement Medals, and numerous other personal, unit, and campaign awards.
