Command Master Chief Smith was born and raised in Southmont, NC. He graduated from Central Davidson High School in June of 1989. He entered the Navy on 17 July, 1989 and attended boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, FL. He attended Cryptologic Technician Technical (CTT) “A” school at Naval Technical Training Center, Pensacola FL.

Then CTTSR Smith’s first duty station was Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Misawa, Japan. He was converted from CTT to CTR and promoted to the rank of CTR3. Master Chief then transferred to Direct Support Department NSGA Northwest, VA. He attended the last 58 course of instruction in Pensacola, FL and was assigned to Naval Information Warfare Activity (NIWA).

Master Chief’s next duty station was USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56). He followed on to CID Pensacola, FL where he was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer shortly after arriving in 2002. His duties included Intermediated Communications Signals Analysis Course instructor, team chief, and course manager. He also re-established the Navy’s Morse Code training program.

In 2005, Master Chief Smith was then assigned to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC), Fort Gordon GA. His duties there included Battle Watch Chief for the Fleet Information Operations Center, Assistant Cryptologic Coordinator for Commander Carrier Strike Group Eight, and Collection Management Division Chief. In 2008 he transferred from Fort Gordon and was assigned to NIOC Menwith Hill, UK.

At Menwith Hill, Master Chief was promoted to the rank of Senior Chief and worked as the Mission Operations Senior Enlisted Leader and Command Senior Chief. Master Chief Smith was selected for the Command Senior Chief program in 2011 and attended the Senior Enlisted Academy and CMC/COB course in Newport RI.

Upon completion of the CMC course he reported as Command Senior Chief to MCM Crew Bulwark in San Diego, CA. In May 2012 he was selected to the rank of Master Chief and in November 2012 reported as the Command Master Chief of NIOC Sugar Grove, WV.

Command Master Chief Smith’s awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal five awards, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal three awards, and the Joint Commendation Medal.
