Senior Chief Petty Officer Joseph E. Cantu is a native of San Antonio, TX, he entered the Navy in January of 1996 in Great Lakes, IL. After graduation from Basic Training, he attended Cryptologic Technician Collection ‘A’ School in Pensacola, FL, followed by Morse Code ‘C’ School in Ft. Huachuca, AZ.
From 1997 to 2000, he served as an Operator while assigned to the Direct Support team out of NSGA Kunia. He deployed multiple times and qualified Enlisted Submarine Warfare Specialist.
In 2000, he transferred to Naval Information Warfare Activity Detachment, San Antonio where he served as an Information Warfare Analyst.
He rotated back to sea and commissioned USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG-93) in Pearl Harbor, HI in 2004. During his time onboard he was selected to Chief Petty Officer and served as a Division and Department LCPO. He deployed to the Western Pacific and qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
In 2007, he transferred to NIOC Hawaii and served as a DNI Analyst prior to his Individual Augmentation to CJTF-HOA. Upon return, he was selected as Department Chief for NSA/CSS Hawaii leading 130 personnel.
From 2010 to 2012, he served as Special Projects LCPO at NIOC Ft. Meade and was selected as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his time here, he again deployed multiple times and earned his Enlisted Information Dominance Warfare Specialist.
He is currently serving as the Senior Enlisted Leader at NIOC Pensacola. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Information Technology Management.
Senior Chief Cantu’s personal awards include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (with four gold stars), and Air Force Achievement Medal.
