Commander Lassek is a native of Minnesota. His previous careers include master automotive technician and self-employed contracting officer. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Asian Division while overseas, CDR Lassek completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in October of 1998.
In March of 1999 CDR Lassek reported to Naval Security Group Activity, Fort Meade, MD, where he was a Direct Support Element Officer providing cryptologic support to submarine commanders. He was then assigned as Maritime Cryptologic Database Facility division officer that provided fleet support during OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.
In August of 2002 CDR Lassek was assigned to Naval Information Warfare Activity (NIWA), Fort Meade, MD supporting both NIWA and NSAs SIGINT Support to Information Operations as Deputy Branch Chief. He managed NSAs Foreign Denial and Deception Branch and liaised with DIA and multi-agency working groups. He also provided Information Operation support to NIWA and NSA while on watch in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
In June 2004 CDR Lassek reported to Commander Submarine Group 8 in Naples, Italy. He stood Fleet Intelligence Watch Officer before transferring to CNE-C6Fs Effects Based Operations providing theater operational assessments to the NAVEUR Commander. He deployed on both the USS EMORY S. LAND (AS 39) and USS KAUFMANN (FFG 59) visiting 7 African countries supporting 6th Fleet operations and assisted in the design of the African Partnership Station concept.
In July of 2007 CDR Lassek reported to NIOC San Diego as an Information Operations (IO) planner. He provided IO support to 3rd Fleet staff for a Homeland Defense mission and the RONALD REAGAN Strike Group before volunteering for a 403 day Individual Augmentation to Iraq. CDR Lassek supported IO Planning and Assessments for Multi-National Corps Iraq Information Operations in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. After returning, he was assigned Cyber Department Head managing NIOC San Diego’s CND mission supporting the CNO directed Summer Surge, assessing network security of 58 PACFLT units and 20 units and shore stations in support of TERMINAL FURY 10.
In June of 2010 CDR Lassek reported to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. TENTH Fleet. As a staff officer he was Deputy Future Operations, Deputy MOC Assessments and Battle Watch Captain. During his tour he supported OPERATIONS ODYSSEY DAWN, TOMADACHI, UNIFIED PROTECTOR and led Future Operations efforts in developing 40 Navy Cyber Mission Force teams supporting USCYBERCOM and the U.S. Navy.
From August 2013 to December 2014 CDR Lassek was Officer in Charge, Navy Information Operations Detachment Groton providing augmentation support, maintenance, certification and installation of Carry on Equipment to COMSUBFOR and FLTCYBERCOM. He next served as Director of Information, Naval Forces Europe, Africa and 6th Fleet. In October 2016, CDR Lassek reported to NIOC Norfolk and assumed duties as Executive Officer in May 2017.
Decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other unit and personal awards.
Commander O’Neill has been awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service
Commendation Medal, four Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement
Medal, and five Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
