Captain Eric Dietz, a native of Wickliffe, Ohio, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautics from Miami University – Oxford, Ohio where he also received his commission through the NROTC program
Upon commissioning in May 1989, he received Naval Flight Officer training at Training Squadrons TEN and EIGHTY-SIX, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida and earned his wings in July 1990. Following Aviation Electronic Warfare Training and SERE school, he reported to Tactical Electronic Attack Squadron ONE TWO NINE (VAQ-129) at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington and was designated an EA6B Prowler Electronic Countermeasures Officer in October 1991.
He was than assigned to Tactical Electronic Attack Squadron ONE THREE FOUR (VAQ-134), the GARUDAS, and deployed with KITTY HAWK Battle Group during its 92-93 WestPac/Indian Ocean Deployment, flying mission in support of Operations PROVIDE COMFORT and SOUTHERN WATCH in Somalia and the Persian Gulf, respectively.
In 1994 Captain Dietz was selected for redesignation to the Cryptologic community and transferred to the Naval Security Group Activity Winter Harbor, Maine in August where he served as Division Officer for the HFDF and CLASSIC WIZARD Divisions, Operations Officer and Electronic Maintenance Officer.
He reported to USS SOUTH CAROLINA (CGN 37) in Norfolk, Virginia in April 1997 and served as OUTBOARD Division Officer, making deployments to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. Subsequent to SOUTH CAROLINA’s deactivation in August 1999, he transferred to Commander, US Atlantic Fleet, Norfolk, Virginia where he served in the Cryptologic/Information Warfare Directorate as the Cryptologic Readiness and Requirements Officer, and Cryptologic Current Operations Officer until April 2002.
In May 2002, he relocated to San Diego, California and assumed duties as Cryptologic Resource Coordinator for Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group ONE (CCDG 1), making his second WestPAC/Indian Ocean Deployment embarked USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), participating in Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, SOUTHERN WATCH and IRAQI FREEDOM. Upon CONSTELLATION’s decommissioning in August 2003, CCDG 1 shifted his flag to newly commissioned USS RONALD REAGON (CVN 76) and completed her maiden voyage, conducting an interfleet transfer (May – July 2004) from Norfolk, Virginia to San Diego, California participating in SUMMER PULSE 04 and SIFOREX/UNITAS exercises with various South American countries.
In August 2004, he was assigned as Officer in Charge, Fleet Information Warfare Detachment (FIWC Det) San Diego and subsequently in July 2005, assumed command of Navy Information Operations Command San Diego, California upon the merger of FIWC Det and Naval Security Group Activity San Diego. He reported to Commander, U.S. THIRD Fleet in August 2007 as the THIRD Fleet Cryptologist and concluded his tour in August 2009.
Captain Dietz served most recently as the Chief, J2/JIOC Strategies Division at U.S. Pacific Command Joint Intelligence Operations Center at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii from August 2009 to August 2012. He will assume duties as the Executive Officer, Navy Information Operations Command, Norfolk, VA in October 2012.
