Command Master Chief Petty Officer Jay A. Spare enlisted in the United States Navy on August 1, 1988. He completed Recruit Training and Radioman Class “A” school at Naval Training Center San Diego, California.
Duty assignments at sea include the commissioning crews of USS MONTEREY (CG 61) Mayport, FL and the USS MAHAN (DDG 72) in Norfolk, VA. He served as a Leading Chief Petty Officer on the USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79) completing a 2006 Arabian Gulf deployment in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.
Ashore he completed tours of duty as a communicator at NCTAMS EASTPAC Hawaii, NAVCOMTELSTA Diego Garcia, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, United States Joint Forces Command and NCTAMS LANT in Norfolk, VA.
Master Chief Spare was selected into the Command Master Chief program in 2010 completing the CMC/COB course in April 2010 (Class 73). His first CMC tour was with the Seahawks of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE TWO SIX completing a seven month deployment embarked on the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) in support of Operations NEW DAWN and ENDURING FREEDOM.
He is a 2006 Honor graduate of the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 128/Green Group). He holds a Masters degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Saint Leo University.
His personal awards include Enlisted Aviation and Surface Warfare Specialist, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
