James H. Pensel
LCDR Pensel is an Iowa native and an honors graduate of National University earning a Masters Degree in Cyber Security specializing in Information Assurance. He started his naval career by enlisting in 1993 as a Data Systems Technician. After attending “A” and “C” schools at Mare Island, California, he reported to serve on the commissioning crew of USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74). While attached to STENNIS, the DS rating was disestablished and he was force-converted to Fire Controlman Technician.
His next tour was at Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific (FCTCPAC) where he served as the NOC LPO and Network Security Officer. During his tour he was laterally converted into the Information Systems Technician rating.
On his following tour aboard USS DULUTH (LPD 6), he was selected and initiated as a Chief Petty Officer in the IT rating. He then reported to USS RENTZ (FFG 46) to lead the radio shack during a Counter Narcotics deployment to the Eastern Pacific. In 2005 he earned a commission through the Limited Duty Officer program in the Information Systems designator and reported to USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) as the ADP Officer and Information Assurance Manager (IAM).
After NIMITZ he reported to Camp Lemonnier to serve on an Individual Augmentee tour as the NCTAMS LANT DET Djibouti Operations Officer. His next command assignment was Special Boat Team TWELVE (SBT 12) as the N6/C4I Department Head. During his tour at SBT-12, he laterally transferred from LDO to the Information Professional (IP) community. He then headed back to sea on board USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) as the IAM and was fleeted up to the Combat Systems Information Officer (CSIO).
LCDR Pensel has also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems and an Associate’s Degree in Network Administration. He has obtained various IT certifications to include: MCP, MCSE in Windows 2000, CCNA, A+, Network+, Security+, and CISSP.
LCDR Pensel has qualified as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist, Surface Warfare Officer, and Information Dominance Warfare Officer. His personal awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4), and various other unit level awards.
