COMMANDER KELVIN B. McGHEE

Commander (CDR) Kelvin B. McGhee, U.S. Navy, assumed command of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, San Diego, on 29 March 2016.
CDR McGhee was born in North Carolina. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1985 and reported to Recruit Training Command, San Diego, California. After completion of recruit training, he attended Radioman 'A' School graduating with honors, resulting in accelerated advancement to Third Class Petty Officer. His further enlisted assignments include COMSEVENTHFLT serving aboard the flagship USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19); Naval Communications Area Master Station Atlantic; and USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56). He was selected for Chief Petty Officer in 1997 while serving onboard USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56).
CDR McGhee was further assigned to CINCLANTFLT in 1997 where he was commissioned to Ensign in March 2000 under the Limited Duty Officer program. After completion of Officer Indoctrination in Pensacola, Florida, he attended two Aegis Schools to include Aegis Console Operator in Wallops Island, Virginia, and Combat System Maintenance Manager Course in Dahlgren, Virginia. His assignments since commissioning include USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55) where he was assigned as the Electronics Material Officer (EMO) while simultaneously serving as Communications Officer and Automated Data Processing Officer. During this tour, he earned his Officer of the Deck (Underway), Command Duty Officer, and Surface Warfare Qualification. In July 2003, he reported to COMAFLOATRAGRU WESTERN PACIFIC in Yokosuka, Japan, where he was assigned as a Training Liaison Officer. In addition to his duties as a Training Officer and Operations Area scheduler, he was selected to fill the Operations Officer billet. In 2006, CDR McGhee was assigned as Executive Officer to the Commander of Joint Transformation Command- Intelligence and Officer-In-Charge of the Consolidated Intelligence Communications Center (CICC) at USJFCOM Joint Transformation Command for Intelligence in Norfolk, Virginia. During this tour, he was recognized as 2007 Joint Junior Officer of the Year. In 2009 CDR McGhee was assigned as the Combat Systems Information Officer (CSIO) onboard USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77). During this tour, he was awarded the FY11 Navy and Marine Corps Association 0-4 Leadership Award by COMNAVAIRPAC and FY11 COPERNICUS award. In 2012 CDR McGhee was assigned as Deputy Branch Head of Security at North Atlantic Treaty Organization Headquarters, Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2015, he was assigned as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff C4I at U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, Manama Bahrain.
CDR McGhee holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems from Strayer University.
CDR McGhee's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5).
