"Misawa kichi niyokoso irasshaimashita,"
or "Welcome to Misawa," is a common phrase you'll hear upon arriving at this base, located on the pastoral northeastern shores of Honshu, Japan's main island. Misawa Air Base is located approximately 400 miles north of Tokyo, adjacent to Misawa City in Aomori Prefecture, (pop. approx. 42,000) in Tohoku. There are about 5,200 U. S. military personnel assigned to Misawa, along with 300 U. S. civilian employees end 900 local national employees. Misawa Air Base is unique in that it's the only combined, joint service installation in the western Pacific. Units representing all four U. S. services are assigned here as well as the Japan Air Self Defense Force, or JASDF. The 35th Fighter Wing serves as the host unit and major associate units include the 301st Intelligence Squadron, Naval Air Facility, Naval Security Group Activity, JASDF Northern Air Defense Force Headquarters and 3rd Air Wing. The Mayor of Misawa City, Shigeyoshi Suzuki, has said, "My goal is to make a better place to live for both Japanese and Americans through continuous promotion of my policy of 'coexistence and co prosperity' with the base. With this policy in mind, I have accepted the United States Forces military men and women, civilians, and their respective family members, as Misawa citizens. " As a result, Misawa enjoys the best community relations climate of any US Forces, Japan installation. There are numerous organizations on base that foster an active intercultural network. Events such as homestay and exchange programs, adopt-a-city programs, festivals, parades, and sporting events keep a majority of the base population in direct contact with the Japanese people and culture.
