CAPT John MacMichael, the son and grandson of Naval Officers, entered the Navy after graduating from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1988 with a degree in Economics. He served operational tours as a Surface Warfare Officer and E-2C Naval Flight Officer before transitioning to the IP community. He achieved his Surface Warfare Officer and Naval Flight Officer designations and completed eight operational deployments as a SWO and NFO. From 2001 through 2003, CAPT MacMichael pursued a degree in Information Systems Technology and Information Assurance through the Naval Postgraduate School Center for INFOSEC Studies and Research (NPS CISR). His thesis outlined the security classifications of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) schemes. He was subsequently selected for and graduated from the National Defense University Chief Information Officer program.
In 2004, CAPT MacMichael was selected for transition to the Information Professional (IP) community and reported to the Navy Information Operations Center (NIOC) Norfolk as the Operations and Computer Networks Officer where he developed the Navy Marine Corps Internet Security Service Level Agreements. During this time he obtained his CISSP and CISM certifications.
In June of 2006, CAPT MacMichael reported to USS NIMITZ as the Combat Systems Officer. NIMITZ completed back-to-back cruises, was awarded the Battle “E” and the Combat Systems Department was twice awarded the “Green CS”. CAPT MacMichael was selected as a COPERNICUS Award winner by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) in 2007.
In 2008, CAPT MacMichael reported to the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic as the Chief Staff Officer. He was selected to serve as Theater C4I Director for the Iraq Joint Operating Area where he was responsible for providing all elements of C4I across Iraqi Joint Operations Area Networks.
In 2010, he reported to NETWARCOM as the Director, Office of Compliance and Assessment. During this time he developed the Navy Computer Security Inspection and Compliance Program (CSICP) and led the assumption of Navy control for USCYBER Command Cyber Readiness Inspection (CCRI).
CAPT MacMichael and his wife, Joy, have three children: David (VPI -07), Jacob (UVA -13), and Noah (VPI – 14). |
