Michael Ellis is a Facilities Assistant at Naval Sea Systems Command, where he has been a team member since 2010. Prior to working at NAVSEA Headquarters, he served for almost 20 years at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division, writing naval messages. “I really liked my work,” he says, but after some organizational change, "I wanted to move up. Working with my local Equal Employment Opportunity Office eventually led me to NAVSEA headquarters."
As a facilities assistant, Michael accepts and delivers packages at the loading dock, assists the Help Desk with its work, and supports special events and office moves. Michael enjoys his work because "I like to help people,” and is motivated by the fact that his office is “team-driven with a goal."
Michael has a disability that affects his vision and memory, but has found a team of supportive supervisors and mentors. His leadership team has provided special tools that aid him in his work, such as ZoomText, which increases font size.
Michael describes his employment with the Department of the Navy best in his own words: "What I’ve realized is that a disability doesn’t change the core of who you are as a person. I have the same drive to work hard and succeed….if you’re a hard worker, having – or developing – a disability won’t change that."
"I always look for new opportunities, which keeps me positive and focused on the future."
