If you are enrolled in FEGLI at the time of your separation, your life insurance will terminate on the last day at the end of the day on which you separate from Federal service. Your enrollment will continue temporarily (except accidental death and dismemberment) for 31 days from the effective date of your separation at no cost to you. Exceptions:
- If you transfer to a FEGLI eligible position in another agency with no break in service, your insurance continues.
- If you separate for retirement, you may be eligible to continue your coverage.
- If you separate from service to enter the military, you are considered to be in a nonpay status for FEGLI purposes. As long as you have reemployment rights under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA), you can keep your FEGLI coverage for up to 24 months in nonpay status, or until 90 days after your military service ends, whichever date comes first. Please contact the Benefits Line
if you separate to enter the military.
You may elect to convert to an individual life insurance policy. No evidence of insurability is required. There is no Government contribution to the cost of the insurance – you pay the full cost of the life insurance.
