Deputy Commodore, Destroyer Squadron 40

 A native of Oswego, IL, CAPT Armstrong is a graduate of the University of Illinois and was commissioned through the NROTC Program in 1990.   

CAPT Armstrong recently completed his tour as the Senior Full Time Support Detailer for Surface Warfare, SEAL, Submarine, and EOD officers in Millington, TN.  He previously served at sea as Commanding Officer, USS PINCKNEY (DDG 91) home-ported in San Diego, CA.  In July 2011, USS PINCKNEY was selected as the 2009-2010 USS Arizona Memorial Trophy winner.  Additionally, he served as Executive Officer in USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG 60); completed department head tours in COMDESRON 1 and USS RODNEY M. DAVIS; and completed division officer tours in USS OUELLET (FF 1077) and USS LEFTWICH (DD 984). 

Ashore, as a Full Time Support (FTS) Officer, CAPT Armstrong served on the staff of the Chief of Navy Reserve (OPNAV N095) as Branch Head, Strategic Planning Division.  He also served as Surface Force Operational Support Officer and Deputy N1 on the COMNAVSURFOR staff with oversight and execution of Navy Surface Force Reserve Component units; as Commanding Officer, Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Peoria, IL; and was an Assistant Professor of Naval Science, Recruiting Officer, and the national course coordinator for Naval Science 302 - Seamanship and Ship Operations at the University of Arizona.    

CAPT Armstrong holds a MA in Public Administration and Policy from the University of Arizona and is a 2008 graduate of the Naval War College, earning a MA in National Security and Strategic Studies.  His awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), and various campaign, service, and unit awards.
