Mr. Lewis assumed the duties as Naval Safety Center Executive Director in 2005.
Mr. Lewis was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps following graduation from college. He served on active duty in the Marine Corps for more than 26 years retiring with the rank of Colonel.
During his Marine Corps career, Mr. Lewis was a designated Naval Aviator and flew the F-4S Phantom II and the FA-18 Hornet. His service included operational flying tours on both the east and west coasts and overseas with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 451, and Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 121. He also served as the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing’s Current Operations Officer.
During his service with Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 121 Mr. Lewis deployed to Southwest Asia and conducted combat operations in the F/A-18D Hornet during Operation Desert Storm.
From December 2000 to May 2002 Mr. Lewis served as the Commanding Officer of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115. During this tour he prepared the squadron for eventual deployment with CVW-3 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
Mr. Lewis’ Marine Corps service included flight instructor tours with Training Squadron 9 and Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101. He also completed non-flying tours serving as Air Officer, 4th Marine Regiment, Okinawa, Japan; Air Representative, Tactical Training and Exercise Control Group, 29 Palms, CA; Amphibious and Special Warfare Branch Chief, Headquarters, Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic; NATO Training Branch Chief, Headquarters, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and Deputy Commander, Naval Safety Center.
During his Marine Corps career, Mr. Lewis accumulated over 3,900 flying hours including more than 2,600 flying hours in the FA-18 Hornet. He is a graduate of Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College (non-resident program) and Air War College. He holds a Bachelors degree in Economics, a Masters degree in Strategic Studies and a second Masters degree in History. His personal decorations include Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service medal, Meritorious Service medal with gold star, Air medal strike/flight with numeral seven and two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals, one with Combat "V."
