Vocalist Audition Requirements
The Navy Music Program is looking for vocalists with performance experience in a variety of commercial styles, are comfortable moving on stage, and can entertain the audience. Applicants should demonstrate appropriate embellishments and inflections in each style.
The audition will be video recorded at the audition site, and the DVD is forwarded to the Navy Music Program Central Management Office (PERS-4014) for final consideration.
The audition is comprised of:
- Prepared material (50% of score): Applicants must demonstrate proper inflections/embellishments in each required style. Applicants will select two songs from each of these seven styles but actually only perform one song of each style at the audition, and the National Anthem, for a total of eight prepared selections. See the available songs in each category:
- Stage Presence (30% of score): Applicants must demonstrate proper microphone technique, good eye contact, ease on stage, and natural body language.
- Scales (10% of score): Sing two octave range of major, natural, melodic, and harmonic minor scale forms. The starting pitch is chosen by the applicant to show a two octave range. Arpeggios follow each scale.
- Sight reading (10% of score): Randomly selected single melody lines in major or minor keys, treble or bass clef, in a variety of keys and meters.
