Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Although the start end dates can vary slightly depending on the organization and source, Red Ribbon Week generally takes place the last full week in October, with the weekends before and following the last full week included as appropriate celebration dates. This year Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 23-31, 2013.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

In addition to encouraging Red Ribbon Week observance, the Department of Defense seeks nominations for the 23rd annual DoD Community Drug Awareness Award and 2013 DoD demand reduction program within each Service, the National Guard, Defense Agencies, and Field Activities which promotes outreach and prevention programs within their communities. The Fulcrum Shield Award recognizes the best youth-based drug demand reduction program that is affiliated with any Service, the National Guard, Defense Agencies, and Field Activity.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Community Drug Awareness Award is presented annually to the best drug demand reduction program for the previous fiscal year (FY) within each Service, the National Guard, the Defense Agencies, and Field Activities. The award was established by the Department in 1990 in an effort to promote community drug awareness efforts in the DoD community. In the past, the Services, the National Guard, Defense Agencies, and Field Activities have exhibited enthusiasm and energy in designing and implementing drug demand reduction programs for the benefit of our military members and their families. The 23rd Annual Community Drug Awareness Awards will be presented on October 17, 2013, in the Pentagon Hall of Heroes.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Fulcrum Shield Award is designed to promote community drug awareness efforts by youth programs associated with the Services, the National Guard, Defense Agencies, and Field Activities from the previous fiscal year (FY).
