BACKGROUND. REF A ANNOUNCED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY. THIS COMMUNITY WAS DEVELOPED TO SERVE AS THE NAVY'S INFORMATION, COMMAND AND CONTROL AND SPACE TECHNOLOGY LEADERS AND EXPERTS. TO HELP INSURE THE FOCUSED DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO EXECUTE ITS MISSION, THE COMMUNITY IS EMBRACING THE CONCEPT OF CONTINUOUS LEARNING. SEVERAL INITIATIVES ARE UNDERWAY TO MAKE CONTINUOUS LEARNING A REALITY AND NOT JUST A GOAL. ONE OF THESE EFFORTS IS A STRUCTURED MENTORING PROGRAM TO ENABLE JUNIOR IP'S TO BENEFIT FROM THE EXPERIENCE AND INSIGHT OF MORE SENIOR IP'S AND TO DIRECTLY BENEFIT THE NAVY BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MORE ROBUST AND CAPABLE IP COMMUNITY. THE PROGRAM WILL BE FACILITATED AND MONITORED (FOR PROGRESS ONLY) AND WILL INCLUDE SPECIFIC TRAINING FOR MENTORS AND MENTOREES IN SUBJECTS RANGING FROM MENTORING MECHANICS TO IP-SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREAS. 2. IP MENTORING PROGRAM. THIS MESSAGE SOLICITS PARTICIPANTS AND CALLS FOR THE SUPPORT OF POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS' SUPERVISORS AND COMMANDS. PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM WILL REQUIRE AN INVESTMENT OF TIME AND COMMITMENT BY THE PARTICIPANT. MENTORS CAN EXPECT TO SPEND 4-8 HOURS EACH MONTH IN MENTORING ACTIVITIES. MENTOREES WILL SPEND AN AVERAGE OF 12-24 HOURS PER MONTH. SOME DUTY TIME WILL BE REQUIRED, INCLUDING SEVERAL VERY SHORT TAD PERIODS TOTALING 2-3 DAYS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. COURSES WILL BE SCHEDULED IN FLEET CONCENTRATION AREAS AND IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER CONFERENCES TO MINIMIZE COSTS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THE MENTOR AND MENTOREE WILL MAKE WEEKLY CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER AND HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OCCASIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. GEOGRAPHIC PROXIMITY TO OTHER IP'S IS NOT ESSENTIAL. THE PROGRAM IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO MAKE "VIRTUAL" MENTORING POSSIBLE. 3. TIMELINE. THE ANTICIPATED IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MENTORING PROGRAM FOLLOWS: THE OFFICIAL KICKOFF WILL BE A DYNAMIC MENTORING ORIENTATION TO BE HELD ON 27 AUG 02 IN NORFOLK VA AND IS OPEN TO ALL IPS WHO WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN MENTORING. THE ORIENTATION WILL BE VIDEOTAPED AND DISTRIBUTED VIA THE IP VIRTUAL WORKPLACE. A SECOND ORIENTATION SESSION WILL BE HELD IN SAN DIEGO ON 29 AUG 02. FOUR DYNAMIC MENTORING WORKSHOPS WILL BE HELD DURING SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2002 TO COMPLETE INITIAL TRAINING OF MENTORS AND MENTOREES. ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS ARE PLANNED THROUGHOUT THE REMAINDER OF FY03. SPECIFIC DETAILS OF DATES, TIMES, LOCATIONS AND PROGRAM CONTENT WILL BE PROMULGATED VIA THE IP COMMUNITY VIRTUAL WORKPLACE. 4. ELIGIBILITY. ALL IP OFFICERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE. CDR'S AND ABOVE ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE AS MENTORS. LCDR'S AND BELOW ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE AS MENTOREES. OFFICERS SELECTED FOR TRANSFER TO THE IP COMMUNITY, BUT WHO HAVE NOT YET TRANSITIONED, ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE ON A SPACE AVAILABLE BASIS. 5. APPLICATION PROCESS. ENROLLMENT COMMENCES 5 AUG 02.
