POSITIVE FEEDBACK SUGGESTS THAT WE CONTINUE TO SPREAD THE WORD ON WHAT NAVY LEADERSHIP IS DOING TO HELP SAILORS MEET THEIR QOL NEEDS. 2. THIS LIST OF INNOVATIVE QOL IDEAS, PROGRAMS, AND INTERESTING FACTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: A. FEEDING THE CREW OF A U.S. NAVY SHIP IS HARD WORK BOTH FOR THE MESS MANAGEMENT SPECIALISTS (MS) AND FOOD SERVICE ATTENDANTS (FSA); HOWEVER, FOR USS TARAWA, HOMEPORTED IN SAN DIEGO, FEEDING THE CREW JUST GOT EASIER. THE SHIP IS PARTICIPATING IN A YEAR LONG PROGRAM PROTOTYPING 13 FOOD SERVICE INITIATIVES WITH NAVAL SUPPLY SYSTEMS COMMAND (NAVSUP). THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO REDUCE THE FOOD SERVICE WORKLOAD AFLOAT WHILE IMPROVING QOL AND NUTRITION. SOME OF THE INITIATIVES BEING TESTED ARE CONTRACTING OUT FSA FUNCTIONS (I.E., CLEANING AND TRASH REMOVAL) WHILE IN PORT; USING CONTRACTOR SUPPORT INSTEAD OF SHIP'S WORKING PARTIES TO LOAD PIERSIDE SUBSISTENCE DELIVERIES INTO STOREROOMS; SERVING PRE-PREPARED ENTREES FOR THE DINNER MEAL WHILE IN PORT (ALLOWS MS AND FSA TO SECURE AT 1400 DAILY WHILE PROVIDING A QUALITY MEAL TO THE CREW); AND INSTALLING NAVSEA APPROVED NO-WAX AND NO-BUFF DECKING. STAY TUNED FOR THE RESULTS OF THE TEST PROGRAM IN FUTURE MESSAGES. B. TIRED OF THE FITNESS EQUIPMENT ON YOUR SHIP BEING DOWN? MWR MAY HAVE THE SOLUTION WITH A NEW TEST PROGRAM CALLED "R AND R" (REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR) SOON TO BE ONLINE IN NORFOLK. PLANS ARE TO OUTFIT A WAREHOUSE SPACE ON THE PIER WITH EXTRA AEROBIC EQUIPMENT (THE STUFF THAT BREAKS DOWN THE MOST). WHEN A TREADMILL, FOR EXAMPLE, BREAKS, THE FLEET RECREATION COORDINATOR (FRC) STAFF IN NORFOLK WILL PULL IT OFF THE SHIP AND REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY. THE FRC STAFF WILL REFURBISH BROKEN EQUIPMENT AND PUT IT BACK INTO CIRCULATION ON OTHER SHIPS - SORT OF LIKE A LENDING LIBRARY. REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN ORDERED AND THE TEST PROGRAM IN NORFOLK WILL SOON GO INTO FULL SWING. IF THE TEST PROGRAM IS SUCCESSFUL, IT WILL BE EXPORTED TO OTHER FLEET CONCENTRATION AREAS. THE TWO RECENTLY TEAMED UP AND INSTALLED A FREE--THAT'S RIGHT--A FREE LAUNDRY FACILITY FOR SAILORS VISITING THE PORT OF JEBEL ALI. THE FACILITY HAS 30 WASHERS AND 30 DRYERS AND IS THE DIRECT RESULT OF INPUT FROM SAILORS AROUND THE FLEET. IN ADDITION, IF YOU'RE IN JEBEL ALI IN SPRING 2000, LOOK FOR A NEW AIR CONDITIONED RECREATION COMPLEX FOR DEPLOYED SAILORS. D. WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? THE MEMBERS OF VP-45'S "PELICAN MILLIONAIRE'S CLUB" THAT'S WHO. VP-45 CREATED THE CLUB TO AID THEIR SAILORS IN PLANNING FOR A MORE SECURE FINANCIAL FUTURE. IN THE PROGRAM, MENTORS ARE TRAINED AND PAIRED WITH OTHER CLUB MEMBERS TO BEGIN THE FINANCIAL PLANNING PROCESS. THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THE MEETINGS BETWEEN MEMBERS AND THEIR FINANCIAL MENTORS IS TO HELP FIND WAYS TO ELIMINATE DEBT. THE SECONDARY GOAL IS TO DETERMINE WHAT TYPES OF DISCRETIONARY FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE, AND THEN EDUCATE THE MEMBERS ON THE TYPES OF INVESTMENT VEHICLES AVAILABLE. IT THEN BECOMES THE MEMBER'S RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION TO DETERMINE WHAT FINANCIAL PLAN IS BEST FOR THEM.
