THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS, THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS, AND I HAVE PUBLISHED THE 2008 DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY (DON) OBJECTIVES (REF A). ACHIEVING THESE OBJECTIVES WILL INCREASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ENTIRE DEPARTMENT, IMPROVE THE LIVES OF SAILORS AND MARINES, AND RESULT IN GREATER SECURITY FOR OUR NATION. WE REQUIRE YOUR CONTINUED EFFORTS TO PRESS AHEAD ON THESE IMPORTANT GOALS. 2. THE 2008 OBJECTIVES BUILD ON THE EFFORTS AND SUCCESSES MADE TO DATE WITH THE 2007 DON OBJECTIVES. THE OBJECTIVES ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF ALL THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN THE DEPARTMENT. NEITHER DOES THEIR POSITION IN THE LIST OF OBJECTIVES REFLECT ANY RELATIVE PRIORITY. THE LIST DOES, HOWEVER, REFLECT AREAS THAT THE LEADERSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY INTENDS TO TRACK THIS YEAR. 3. THE SIX DON OBJECTIVES ARE: A. PROVIDE A TOTAL NAVAL WORKFORCE CAPABLE AND OPTIMIZED TO SUPPORT THE NATIONAL DEFENSE STRATEGY. B. USE THE NAVY-MARINE CORPS TEAM TO AGGRESSIVELY PROSECUTE THE GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM. C. BUILD THE NAVY-MARINE CORPS FORCE FOR TOMORROW. D. SAFEGUARD THE PEOPLE AND RESOURCES OF THE NAVY-MARINE CORPS TEAM. E. STRENGTHEN ETHICS AS A FOUNDATION OF EXEMPLARY CONDUCT WITHIN THE DON. F.
