MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- Ever since shore and submarine forces adapted new leave policies in late 2010, use of Electronic Leave (E-Leave) has continued to increase as the October 2012 Navy-wide implementation deadline approaches.
As directed by NAVADMIN 252/10, shore commands and submarine forces began using E-Leave to process leave requests by Aug. 1 and Oct. 1, 2010, respectively—so far with great success.
E-Leave’s first big trial came during the expected surge of leave requests during last winter’s holiday season. “E-Leave performed smoothly,” said John G. Courtney, Navy E-Leave program manager. “After the holidays we found nearly 228,000 leave transactions were successfully processed through DFAS [Defense Financing and Accounting Service].
“Since then, 268,346 successful leave transactions have been processed as of March 2,” Courtney added. “We expect this number to continue increasing as we move toward the E-Leave deadline. Ships and aviation squadrons deploying on ships need to begin using E-Leave by October 2012.”
In preparation to meet the Navy-wide deadline, the Navy Standard Integrated Personnel System (NSIPS) implementation team is busy upgrading NSIPS shipboard servers to deliver the capability to the fleet.
“E-Leave is part of an overall upgrade package we began dispatching out to shipboard servers in October 2010,” said Art Tate, the NSIPS implementation manager. “We’re continuing to deliver on schedule to the fleet so the total force will be ready for E-Leave in time for the October 2012 deadline.”
E-Leave set up and training for implementation to the fleet will be announced at a later date.
