MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- The Navy's Personal and Family Readiness Division will host the 2009 Navy Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Annual Conference June 16–18 on Naval Station Norfolk.
The theme for this year's conference is, "Building Horizon Networks for our Special Needs Families."
"Of particular importance is the vision of the EFMP as a coordinated multi-service delivery system. The program encourages cooperation, collaboration and responsible use of limited resources to maximize the strengths of our local area EFMP coordinators," said Marcia Hagood, EFMP manager.
The EFMP was established to ensure Sailors with special needs family members are assigned to a geographic location that provides them with appropriate support. The program is designed to identify and document longterm medical, mental health and special educational needs of family members. Enrollment in the EFMP ensures consideration of the needs of family members in the detailing process.
"Targeted audience includes medical treatment facility EFMP coordinators, Fleet and Family Support Center liaisons, health care providers and EFMP command representatives," according to Hagood.
The conference sessions are designed to provide relevant training and tools necessary to strengthen local area programs.
Agenda topics include suitability screening, education and developmental intervention services, effective customer service, TriCare, screening for special education, central screening committee process and other related services.
"At the conclusion of the conference, attendees will have a better understanding of major components of the EFMP and will be able to establish a working network to successfully implement EFMP requirements at their assigned locations," said Hagood. "I'm hoping commanding officers/OICs will encourage their EFMP command representative to attend the conference since emphasis is to provide valuable insight and skills for EFMP coordinators.
