Keep DUI off Your Holiday List

From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – As Sailors and families ready for holiday celebrations, officials stress designate before you celebrate and encourage safe and sober driving.

“For many Sailors the holiday season comes with holiday parties, much deserved down-time and celebrations that involve alcohol, said Dorice Favorite, director, Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Office (NADAP).  “While the number of driving under the influence (DUI) reports in the Navy has declined significantly in the past five years, the holidays still represent the period with the most DUIs.”

DUIs are listed among negative performance indicators considered by selection and promotion boards.  Professionally, DUI can result in mandatory participation in a rehabilitation program, adverse performance evaluations and fitness reports, relief for cause, and reduced career opportunities.

NADAP suggests the following tips to prevent drunk driving this holiday season and throughout the year.

  • Designating a sober driver before the party begins.
  • Don’t get behind the wheel of your vehicle if you’ve been out drinking, or are impaired.
  • Program the number for a taxi service in your phone before you head out and call for a ride when the night is over.
  • Use mass transit.
  • Call a sober friend or family member to come and get you.
  • Stay where you are and sleep it off until you are sober.

Drinking alcohol and driving is a dangerous combination that can have lasting effects personally and professionally.

“Too many lives have been ruined and careers ended over something that is completely avoidable,” said Favorite. “If you plan to consume alcohol designate before you celebrate and remember to practice moderation.”

Lastly, Favorite reminds everybody that friends and family don’t let others drive drunk or impaired. Take the keys and never let a friend leave your sight if you think they are about to drive while impaired.

NADAP’s mission is to support Fleet readiness by fighting alcohol abuse and drug use.  For more information and resources visit the NADAP web page located under the Support and Services tab at www.npc.navy.mil.
