Mentoring the Total Force 

 
Mentoring, both formal and informal, is an important part of every culture. A mentor’s advice and guidance helps develop and prepare their mentee for growth.
Deliberate, effective, and consistent mentorship leads to greater professional and personal development and can contribute to career success. Mentorship is especially important before key career decision points.
It is incumbent upon every Navy leader to mentor and guide their Sailors throughout their careers, supporting and developing them into our force’s future leaders.
 
 
How Do I Become a Mentor?
 
Anyone can serve informally as a mentor in their command or community, and Navy also offers formal mentor training through the Bureau of Naval Personnel/Naval Personnel Command Mentor Certification Program.
 
BUPERS and NPC offer the Mentor Certification Program to support a mentoring culture in the Navy by “providing a mentoring framework and toolset of proven techniques and skills that maximizes the partnership between mentors and their protégés.”
 
The program provides a standardized framework, tools, access to a network of command certified mentors and other support for the development of new mentorship partnerships and programs across the fleet.
