MISSION

Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officers (1520 designator) develop, establish, and implement maintenance and material management policies and procedures to support naval aircraft, airborne weapons, attendant systems, and related support equipment fleet-wide.

In addition to working in fleet maintenance organizations, Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officers (AMDOs) as they mature through their careers get involved in all aspects of system acquisitions and support as Program Managers and Logistics experts.  You will find AMDOs located at numerous commands within the acquisition pipeline such as NAVAIR, SPAWAR, NAVSEA and DCMA.  Eventually senior AMDOs compete with other Acquisition Corps (AC)members to become Major Program Managers (MPM) for acquisition commands (PEO, PMA, CNATT, DCMA) or Major Commands such as the large Fleet Readiness Centers (FRC).

LATERAL TRANSFER

Lateral transfer into the Aerospace Maintenance Duty Community is very competitive.  It is not uncommon for some officers to apply to several lateral transfer boards before being selected.

As a primary consideration of the board members will be sustained superior performance within an officers' warfare specialty.  Board members will also be looking for officers that have sought out and performed maintenance, or maintenance related, duties during their tours.  While maintenance experience is not required, it will definitely enhance the likelihood for selection.  Therefore, officers should highlight their exposure to maintenance functions in the course of their duties. Recommendations, particularly those from Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officers (1520's) also serve to strengthen a package.  If possible, endorsement letters from Commanding Officers should be more than passing instructions; a CO's support is an important part of the consideration for selection.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO TRANSFER?

All officers who have qualified in their warfare specialty and in their first operational tour, are eligible to transfer into Aerospace Maintenance Duty.

HOW DO I REQUEST A TRANSFER?

MILPERSMAN 1212-010 specifies how to apply for a lateral transfer, including what information must be submitted in a transfer request package. The package is sent to PERS-801G where it is maintained until the next lateral transfer board convening date.  The link to the BUPERS Selection Board Home will assist you with any questions relating to your package including content, format, etc.. For specific guidance regarding accession into the AMDO community contact the Detailer or Community Manager.
