The FAO Detailer is the primary point of contact for all FAO assignments. Even FAOs seeking to compete for nominative special programs, fellowships, or attache assignments must receive tour release from the FAO Detailer prior to submitting an application.

The standard detailing window is 9-12 months prior to PRD, or 3-4 months prior to attache application season. As members of a relatively small community in high-demand, Navy FAOs should expect assignment strictly to 1710 billets, with rare exception.
