Maintenance and Material Management (3-M) Coordinators

 

Highly motivated leaders are needed at sea to serve as 3MCs!

Maintenance and Material Management (3-M) System Coordinators are responsible for the coordination of all facets of 3-M systems. The 3-M System Coordinator (3MC) must possess the ability to implement, evaluate and coordinate Planned Maintenance System (PMS) actions and the ability to operate and effectively manage the Ship's Maintenance program. In addition, the 3MC may also serve as a unit's availability manager.

3MCs work closely with the Commanding Officer, the Executive Officer and the Chief's mess, coordinating and directly supervising all administrative facets of the 3-M System program. 3MCs have increased command-wide visibility and breakout opportunities among peers.

Likewise, an assignment as a 3MC may offer additional avenues for remaining in desired ports or relocating to other ports. 3MC assignments are not just for the engineering ratings! Most ratings may serve as 3MCs, provided basic qualifications are met.

Being a highly successful 3MC is primarily about being a great leader. Top performing 3MCs are active in their units. These leaders get out, get around and get involved in shipboard corrective and preventative maintenance. Prior fundamental 3M qualifications will help in preparation to excel as a 3MC:

  • 3M Maintenance person 
  • 3M Work Center Supervisor 
  • 3M Division Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO)/ Leading Petty Officer (LPO)

Leaders ordered to 3MC billets will attend the 3M systems coordinator course prior to reporting to their sea-duty commands, and upon successful course completion, NEC-9517 will be awarded.
