Here are some tools and tips to make sure you have a successful assessment.
1. Work with your ISIC and find out what THEY are looking for! Remember every assessment is unique and each assessor looks for different things and concentrates on different areas (based on their strengths usually). If you’re newly reported and you feel your program is not up to par, consider requesting an assist visit from your ISIC prior to an assessment a few months prior to your scheduled assessment to see where your program currently is. This will let your chain of command see where your program currently stands and gives you an idea of where you need to go to get your program back on track!
2. Be organized when the ISIC comes in for the inspection. Below are some additional tips that will help you:
a. Working Binder (15 month SEAOS/PRD, FR-PTS, LTC, etc.)
b. CDB Binder (or drawer depending on the size of your command) (minutes, references, etc). Consider breaking down CDBs by subjects (Reporting, Conversion, FR-PTS, Special Programs, Separations, etc.). This will allow much easier access when the assessor asks to see them.
c. Command Indoctrination (musters, critique forms, etc.). Work with your Command Indoctrination Coordinator to obtain these items.
d. Sponsor Program (critique forms). Work with your Command Sponsor Coordinator to obtain these items.
e. Monthly Retention Report (Use the one in CIMS)
f. TAP (last 2 FYs of DD 2648s)
By having the aforementioned items populated and ready to go, you will have covered nearly all of the topics in the assessment. Also, keep your chain of command informed, get everyone on board in the preparation for the assessment, and ensure all key players are available during your assessment!
3. Ensure your CDB/Sponsor information is populated in CIMS!
4. For GENDET or PACT Sailors ensure that they have CDB information on file. Remember to use Fleet RIDE when requesting a quota for the Navy-wide Advancement Exams (NWAEs) for your GENDET (non-rated) Sailors.
Communication is KEY... Communicate with your ISIC about the requirements/assessment items that they will look for!
