CDR Mike Martinez hails from Topeka, KS and grew up around the world while his father served as an officer in the United States Army. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science and was commissioned in 1998. He was awarded his Naval Flight Officer Wings of Gold in July of 1999.
CDR Martinez reported to the Skinny Dragons of Patrol Squadron FOUR in Kaneohe, HI in May 2000 for his first operational tour. During his tour he served as the Legal Officer, Line Division Officer and NFO NATOPS Officer. He completed deployments in support of SEVENTH Fleet as well as FIFTH Fleet immediately after 9/11 in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During his time with the Skinny Dragons, the squadron was twice awarded the Battle “E”.
CDR Martinez reported to Patrol Squadron THIRTY in May 2003 for duties as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Naval Flight Officer. While there he served as the Communications Officer, Tactical Development and Evaluation Division Officer and NFO Training Officer.
In April 2006 CDR Martinez joined the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) and qualified as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer. During his time on board, he served as the Gear Branch Officer and the Fuels Division Officer.
CDR Martinez reported to the Naval War College in Newport RI in October of 2007. He graduated with Distinction and was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
In May 2009 CDR Martinez again joined the Skinny Dragons of Patrol Squadron FOUR for his Department Head tour. He served as the Tactics Officer, Training Officer and Operations Officer. During his tenure the squadron completed a deployment in support of SEVENTH Fleet operations and was awarded the Battle “E”.
In May of 2011 CDR Martinez reported to the Naval Personnel Command in Millington, TN. While there he served as the Carrier Strike Group and Carrier Placement Officer, Major Staff Placement Officer and Washington DC Placement Branch Head. He departed the command in June of 2014 for transition training in the P-8A Poseidon at Patrol Squadron THIRTY.
CDR Martinez’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (1st Strike/Flight), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3) and various campaign, service and unit awards.
