CDR Daniel Papp is a native of Chicago, Illinois and graduated with honors from Northern Illinois University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology. Following two years of enlisted naval service, CDR Papp received his commission from the Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and was designated as a Naval Flight Officer in February, 1998.
Operationally, CDR Papp served in Patrol Squadron FORTY at NAS Whidbey Island, WA from 1998 to 2002. During his tour with the "Fighting Marlins" he completed one SEVENTH Fleet and two FIFTH Fleet deployments and served as the Personnel Officer, Ground Safety Officer, Aviation and Armament Division Officer, Readiness Officer, NFO Training Officer, P-3C Mission Commander and Instructor NFO.
Following his first sea tour, CDR Papp reported to Patrol Squadron THIRTY where he served as the Weapons and Tactics Unit Special Projects Officer, ISR SME, and AGM-84H (SLAM ER) Fleet Introduction Team Lead. While at VP-30, he achieved designation as an ACTC Level V Orion Weapons and Tactics Instructor.
In April 2004, CDR Papp reported to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, where he served as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer and V-3 Division Officer. In October 2005, CDR Papp reported to Naval Personnel Command where he served as the VP Shore Detailer. During this tour he volunteered for a 15 month IA and flew over 1100 combat hours in light fixed wing aircraft as an Airborne ISR Systems Officer in support of a Joint Special Operations Taskforce.
In June 2007, CDR Papp attended the Air Command and Staff College, where he received his Masters of Science degree in Military Operations and completed JPME Phase I.
In September 2008, CDR Papp reported to the "Wizards" of Special Projects Patrol Squadron TWO based at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where he served as the Tactics Officer, Training Officer, Operations Officer, and Detachment Officer-in-Charge. The Wizards were awarded the 2009 and 2010 Battle "E" during his tenure.
In December 2010, CDR Papp reported to NAVAIRSYSCOM, PMA-205 based at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland where he served as the P-8A Poseidon Assistant Program Manager (Training Systems). In September 2012, he departed NAVAIR for transition training in the P-8A Poseidon at VP-30, and in May 2013 he assumed Executive Officer duties at Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN.
CDR Papp is a Level II Joint Qualified Officer and has been awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (10 Strike/Flight), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award, and various campaign, service, and unit awards.
