Command Master Chief


         Master Chief Richard J. Haninger Jr. was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, and enlisted in the United States Navy in July 1987.  After completing basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended AT "A" school and Advance First Term Avionics school, at NAS Millington, Tennessee.  He next attended the Naval Aircrewman Candidate School at NAS Pensacola Florida, and P-3 In-Flight Technician (IFT) training at VP-30 NAS Jacksonville, Florida. 

         After completing his initial flight training, he reported to his first sea duty command Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN (VP-16), aboard NAS Jacksonville Florida.  While there he completed a deployment to NAS Sigonella, and earned his Naval Aircrewman wings after qualifying as an IFT. 

        His next tours were with the Tigers of Patrol Squadron EIGHT (VP-8), home ported at NAS Brunswick, Maine; The Wizards of Special Projects Unit TWO (VPU-2), NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii; Force Warfare, NAS Patuxent River; and the Bureau of Personnel Sea Duty Component (BUPERS SDC), Dallas, Texas.  Master Chief Haninger completed a tour at Special Projects Unit ONE (VPU-1), NAS Brunswick, Maine, where he successfully led his crew thorough numerous detachments in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. 

         After transferring to Aviation Test Squadron TWO ZERO (VX-20), NAS Patuxent River; he was selected to be the Command Senior Chief for Naval Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) and Naval Test Wing Atlantic (NTWL), NAS Patuxent River, Maryland.  Following his selection to the Command Senior Chief program, he was the first CSC for Air Test and Evaluation Squadron TWO ONE (HX-21), aboard NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, and was selected to Master Chief Petty Officer. 

        Additionally, he has earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare designation, was selected as the 1999 Force Warfare, NTWL, NAWCAD, and NAVAIR Sailor of the Year, is a graduate of the United States Navy Command Master Chief and Chief of the Boat (CMC/COB) School (Class 76), graduate of the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) (Class 154 Blue), and has completed over 5,100 flight hours.  His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Air Medal (Six Strike Flight awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
