Command Master Chief
CMDCM Stephan Fontenot was born in New Orleans Louisiana and grew up in Lafayette Louisiana. He enlisted in the United States Navy Delayed Entry Program in February 1987 and shipped out to boot camp in June 1987. Following Basic Training in San Diego California, he completed Basic Electricity and Electronics and Interior Communications “A” School and was frocked to the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. He then reported to sea duty aboard the USS CLEVELAND (LPD 7) where he served 5 years and qualified as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist. During his tour on the USS CLEVELEND he completed two Persian Gulf deployments and one Law Enforcement operations deployment to the Gulf of Mexico. He also served while USS CLEVELAND was primary host vessel for the environmental cleanup following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Valdez Alaska and was advanced to the rank of First Class Petty Officer.
After sea duty, Master Chief Fontenot took orders to Instructor duty at Service School Command San Diego’s Interior Communications “A” School where he qualified as Master Training Specialist. He then reported back to sea aboard the USS SHILOH (CG 67) where he completed two Persian Gulf deployments as CE Div LCPO. There he qualified as Engineering Officer of the Watch and was advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1996. He then returned back to his roots for a 3 year tour as course supervisor of Interior Communications “A” School at Service School Command Great Lakes. Not long after his arrival, he was advanced to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He then decided to go out of rate and was billeted as 3M Coordinator and Admin Dept LCPO on USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20) and was there advanced to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. While on MOUNT WHITNEY he served during the historic stand up of the Army’s Horn of Africa Command. After MOUNT WHITNEY was reassigned as an MSC vessel, Master Chief Fontenot completed his 3M coordinator tour aboard the USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) and was then selected to the Command Master Chief Program. Master Chief Fontenot successfully served his first CMC tour aboard the USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75) where he completed 2 European deployments. He then reported to the Center for Personal and Professional Development for a 3 year tour of duty and is currently serving as CMC of Fighter Squadron VFA-31 at Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach VA.
Master Chief Fontenot obtained a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1986 and a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management from National University in San Diego CA in 1994. He is a graduate of the US Navy Senior Enlisted Academy where he received the Naval Heritage Essay Award.
Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, 4 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, 4 Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, 5 Good Conduct Awards and various unit and service commendations. He is the proud father of four daughters, two of whom are serving as Surface Warfare Officers in the United States Navy.
