CMDCM(AW/SW) Michael G. Bates

Command Master Chief


Command Master Chief (AW/SW) Michael Bates entered the Navy in January 1988 from Lexington, Kentucky and attended Recruit Training Command in San Diego, California.  He attended Damage Controlman "A" School in San Francisco, CA.

His sea duty assignments include: USS Detroit (AOE-4) 1988-1990, USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7) 1990-1992 (decommissioned), USS Savannah (AOR-4) 1992-1995 (decommissioned), USS Enterprise (CVN-65) 1995-1997, Afloat Training Group Norfolk 1997-2000, during this tour he was initiated to Chief. USS Nicholas (FFG-47) 2003-2006, USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) 2008-2011 and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) 2011-2013, during this tour he was advanced to Master Chief and was selected to the Command Master Chief Program.  

His shore duty assignments include: AFDL-6 Dynamic 2000-2003, and Commander Patrol Coastal Squadron 2006-2008 during this tour he was advanced to Senior Chief.

Command Master Chief Bates served as Command Master Chief of Strike Fighter Squadron Three Seven, 2013-2015 and he is now the Command  Master Chief of VFA-106 Gladiators.  

His Navy schools include: Army corps school of chemical engineering, Senior Enlisted Damage Control, Senior Enlisted Academy and Command Leadership Course.

He holds an Associates of Science in Marine Engineering degree.  

His awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (7 awards), numerous individual, Campaign, and Unit awards, 2010 COMNAVAIRPAC Leadership Award and 2011 Carl Vinson Swamp Fox award for Leadership.

He and his wife Natalie have been married for 26 years and have three children, Erica 25, Michael 24 and Joshua 19.
