VFA-103 Executive Officer: CDR Patrick "Menudo" Fernandes
Commander Fernandes was born in Dakar, Senegal and grew up in Brockton, MA. He attended Brockton High School, graduating in June 1988 and subsequently enlisted in the Navy in August 1988. He attended RTC San Diego, graduated from Aviation Structural Mechanic “A” in Millington, TN and started his naval career with Training Wing THREE AIMD, NAS Miramar. In November 1998 at the rank of AMS1, he was selected to attend OCS under the ADM Boorda “Seaman to Admiral” program. CDR Fernandes would attend Naval Flight Officer training at NAS Pensacola and earned his wings of gold in September 1999.
His operational assignments include tours with Sea Control Squadron THIRTY EIGHT, USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64); Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO TWO, USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63); Strike Fighter Squadron ELEVEN, USS ENTERPRISES (CVN 65).
His shore assignments include instructor duty with Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO SIX; he was selected by his peers as the 2008 Atlantic Strike Fighter Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor of the Year. He also severed as Deputy Mission Commander for Open Skies with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. He completed the Air Command and Staff College Non-Resident Program.
CDR Fernandes has accumulated more than 3,500 hours in various aircraft and more than 1,000 arrested landings. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2nd award), Aerial Achievement Medal (2nd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6th award) and numerous unit, campaign and service awards.
