CDR Shane Paul Tanner received his commission from Texas A&M University ROTC in 1998 as a member of the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets.Shane Paul Tanner received his commission from Texas A&M University ROTC in 1998 as a member of the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets. He completed Primary and Intermediate flight training in Pensacola, FL while assigned to the VT-4 “Warbucks” in 1999. He reported to the Fleet Replacement Squadron, VAW-120 “Greyhawks,” and earned his Wings on 20 October 2000.
He then reported to VAW-121 “Bluetails” / CVW-7 from 2001-2004. Deployed aboard the USS JOHN F KENNEDY (CV 67), he flew Homeland Defense missions during the initial phase of Operation NOBLE EAGLE, and subsequently conducted offensive combat operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. In 2004, he deployed aboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) and conducted combat operations in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
CDR Tanner reported to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) in Fallon, NV as a Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) at the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School (CAEWWS) from 2004-2007, where he served as the WTI Program Manager and member of the Hawkeye Tactical Analysis Team (HETAT).
From 2007-2008, CDR Tanner served as the Training Officer for the VAW-115 “Liberty Bells” / CVW-5. He conducted two Western Pacific Patrols and numerous joint and combined exercises while embarked aboard the USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) on her final deployment.
He served as a Department Head for VAW-117 “Wallbangers” / CVW-11 from 2009-2012. He embarked aboard the USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) and flew combat operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, to include conducting initial Maritime CONOPS development during Operation NEPTUNE SCISSORS 2010. He subsequently served as an advisor to the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) CSG during Operation NEPTUNE SCISSORS 2011.
From 2012-2014, he was assigned to the Joint Staff J8 as a member of the Joint Integrated Air and Missile Defense Organization (JIAMDO). During this tour he served as the Executive Assistant to the JIAMDO Director and as the Military Program Lead for BLACK DART, the DoD’s live-fire Counter-UAS Weapons and Technology Demonstration.
He served as the Executive Officer of the VAW-120 “Greyhawks,” the Hawkeye/Greyhound FRS from 2014-2015. After transitioning to the E-2D, he reported as the Executive Officer of VAW-125 “Tigertails” in June 2016, where he immediately led the Tigertails permanent shift from their duty station in NS Norfolk, VA to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, joining CVW-5 and CTF-70 in the Forward Deployed Naval Force.
CDR Tanner graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Community Health in 1998. He graduated from the United States Naval War College as a member of the “Halsey Group” with a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies in 2009. He graduated from the Joint Forces Staff College in 2014 earning Joint Qualification. He is also a graduate of the United States Navy Strike Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School (TOPDOME).
CDR Tanner has accumulated over 2,500 Hawkeye hours, with special crew time in the F/A-18D, F-16B, S-3B, E-3B, and others. He has logged 477carrier arrested landings, and 174 combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Medal (7), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4), and various other personal, unit, and campaign awards.
