Command Master Chief


         Master Chief Carlsen was born in San Francisco, California. His father is a retired CWO3 in the Army. He grew up in the small town of Susanville, California and spent the later part of his teen years living on various bases around the country. He graduated from Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona and enlisted in the Navy on July 7, 1986. He completed Recruit Training in San Diego, California and attended Basic Electricity and Electronics before going on to Interior Communications Electrician A school in San Diego and Interior Communications Electrician C school in Great Lakes, Illinois.

        Master Chief Carlsen’s previous duty stations include his first ship, USS CORAL SEA (CV-43). Upon decommissioning he reported to NAS ADAK, AK Security Detachment for duty as a security patrolman and watch supervisor. His next assignment after completing 7 months of Interior Communications C schools was another sea duty tour on board USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73). Then seeking more adventure he transferred back to San Diego, California and became a member of Fleet Combat Camera Group Pacific. Upon completion of that tour he transferred to his first shore duty tour at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) FT. George G. Meade, Maryland for duty as an instructor at the Joint Service Broadcast Radio and Television Systems Engineering course, where he served as an instructor, course coordinator and branch chief over three other maintenance courses.

        He earned his Master Training Specialist, Joint Service Master Instructor and Civilian certification as a Certified Broadcast Television Engineer and upon transfer was selected to Chief Petty Officer. His next assignment was on the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) where he served as a maintenance chief and E-Division LCPO and at the end of that tour he was selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer as well as assignment to the United States Naval Academy where he served as Third Battalion LCPO and 13th Company Senior Enlisted Leader. Upon completion of that highly successful tour he was assigned to the USS NASSAU (LHA-4) where he served as the C5I Maintenance Branch LCPO over 4 maintenance divisions, and C5I Department LCPO and earned his boiler plant Engineering Officer Of the Watch Qualification while tying the underway record for consecutive days at 159 days doing anti-piracy operations in the gulf of Aden in 2010. Upon NASSAU’s decommissioning in March of 2011 he reported onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69) where he was promoted to Master Chief and performed duties as the CS-8 (IC Division) Division Officer, Combat Systems Maintenance Master Chief, and acting CMC when the ships CMC was absent.

        Master Chief Carlsen was selected to the Command Master Chief program and reported to VAW-121 in April of 2012 to join the BLUETAILS and assume the duties and responsibilities as Command Master Chief. Command Master Chief Carlsen holds a Bachelors of Science in Information Technology from the University of Maryland University College, an Associates of Science in Electronics technology from the University of Phoenix. He is a 2007 graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 134, GREEN Team), as well as a graduate of the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course Class 099. His decorations include: Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (7 awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), and multiple other campaign, service and unit awards.
