CDR Jeffrey D. Sowers
Commander Jeff Sowers is a native of Riverton, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1994, earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He entered Officer Candidate School in November of 1997 and was commissioned in April of 1998. CDR Sowers was designated a Naval Aviator in September of 1999.
After completing H-46D fleet replacement pilot training, he reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron SIX (HC-6) in Norfolk flying the venerable Sea Knight. While there, he deployed in USS INCHON (MCS-12) and USS NASSAU (LHA-4) and served as a Ground/Pilot Training Officer, Aviation Safety Officer and Detachment Operations Officer.
Upon completion of his first tour, CDR Sowers reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron THREE (HC-3) (later re-designated Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron THREE (HSC-3)) in San Diego, transitioned to the MH-60S and served as an Instructor Pilot. During this tour, he served as the Instructional Systems Development Officer, Assistant Training, Training Officer and Quality Assurance Officer. CDR Sowers earned a Master of Science in Global Leadership from the University of San Diego in 2005 and completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase I in 2006.
CDR Sowers reported aboard USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD-6) in March of 2006 and served as Hangar Deck Officer, Handler and Mini Boss. He earned his Officer of the Deck Underway qualification while on deployment in 2007. In April 2008, he reported to ECRC Norfolk for assignment to U.S. European Command as the Joint Operations Center Executive Officer in Stuttgart, Germany.
CDR Sowers reported to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO (HSC-2) in Norfolk for refresher training in the MH-60S in December 2008. He completed his Department Head tour at Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO TWO (HSC-22) in Norfolk where he served as Training Officer and Maintenance Officer. While there, he deployed in USS FREEDOM (LCS-1) as Officer-in-Charge.
Following his Department Head Tour, CDR Sowers reported to the Office of the Secretary of the Navy, where he served as Director of the Secretary’s White House and Congressional Liaison Office.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign decorations.
