Captain Robert ‘Fitz’ Gentry

Deputy Commander, Carrier Air Wing ONE

 

 

 

Captain Robert ‘Fitz’ Gentry is a native of Williamsburg, VA.  He received his commission and Bachelor of Science degree in History from the United States Naval Academy in 1994 and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in June 1996.

 

 After completing EA-6B fleet replacement training, he reported to the “Yellow Jackets” of VAQ-138 completing two WESTPAC deployments aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) and USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and deployment in support of Operation ALLIED FORCE.

 

 Transitioning to the F-14, Captain Gentry reported to the “Puking Dogs” of VF-143, deploying in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM aboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) and USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).

 

 In January 2005, Captain Gentry reported to the “Tomcatters” of    VF-31 for his department head tour, deploying aboard             USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) and flying combat missions in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

 

 From October 2006 to October 2008, Captain Gentry served as Strike Fighter Placement Officer at the Naval Personnel Command.  Subsequently, he attended the Australian Command and Staff College, earning a graduate diploma in Defense Studies.

 

 In January 2011, Captain Gentry reported as Executive Officer of VFA-103, the “Jolly Rogers”. Assuming command in May of 2012, he led the squadron through back-to-back combat deployments in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69).

 

 Following his command tour, Captain Gentry served as Executive Assistant to Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic and Joint Staff J7 USEUCOM Desk Officer. 

 

 Captain Gentry reported to Carrier Air Wing ONE as Deputy Commander in March 2018.

 

 Captain Gentry has accumulated over 3,600 flight hours and 1050 carrier-arrested landings.  His military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal with combat ‘V’, and numerous personal, unit, campaign and service awards.
