CAPT Hewlett attended Texas A&M University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science. He received his commission as a Naval Officer through the NROTC program at Texas A&M and graduated in December 1991. He completed flight training at NAS Kingsville, TX, was designated a Naval Aviator in January, 1995, and reported to VS-41 Shamrocks at NAS North Island, CA for training in the S-3B Viking Fleet Replacement Squadron.
CAPT Hewlett’s operational tours include VS-33 Screwbirds, at NAS North Island, where he deployed in USS NIMITZ in support of Operation Southern Watch. Also, Carrier Air Wing NINE, where he served as the Air Wing Landing Signals Officer on board USS JOHN S STENNIS (CVN 74) and USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) flying missions in support of Noble Eagle and Operation Enduring Freedom. CAPT Hewlett’s operational Department Head tour was with the Scouts of VS-24 at NAS Jacksonville, FL.
In 2007 CAPT Hewlett screened for operational command and transitioned to the VFA community. In 2008, he reported to the Wildcats of VFA-131 where he served as the Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer and flew missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on two combat deployments aboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69).
CAPT Hewlett’s staff tours include a tour in the Pentagon, as a Country Desk Officer in the J-5 Middle East Directorate of the Joint Staff from 2005 to 2007. After Command of the Wildcats in 2011, he reported to Commander, Naval Air Force, Atlantic, where he served as the Executive Assistant on the AIRLANT staff.
CAPT Hewlett is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College and has accumulated over 3200 flight hours, 720 carrier arrested landings, and has flown over 80 combat missions in direct support of Coalition forces on the ground in Afghanistan. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Four Strike/Flight Air Medals, Five Navy Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards.
