Ewald graduated from the University of Arizona in 1989 and received his commission from Aviation Officer Candidate School in September 1989 following six years of service with the Arizona Air National Guard. In November 1990, he earned his wings of gold, was designated a Naval Flight Officer and reported to VA-128, the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS), for training as a Bombardier/Navigator in the A-6E Intruder.
Following FRS training, Captain Ewald joined the EAGLES of Attack Squadron 115, forward deployed in Japan with deployments to the Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf and throughout the Western Pacific aboard USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) including the commencement of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH in 1992. In May 1995, he reported to the GRIM REAPERS of VF-101, the F-14 FRS for training in the venerable Tomcat.
His next sea tour began in February 1996, where Captain Ewald served with Fighter Squadron 102 and deployed aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) on a Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf cruise in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. Captain Ewald detached from VF-102 in January 1999 and reported to VF-101 for duty as a FRS Instructor until October 2000. He returned to VF-102 and deployed in September 2001 aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Following deployment, Captain Ewald relocated with the DIAMONDBACKS to NAS Lemoore, CA for the Super Hornet transition.
In November 2002, Captain Ewald was assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the Super Hornet Fleet Integration Team. Following this tour, he served as the VFA-106 E/F Officer-in-Charge as part of the fleet’s largest FRS. In August 2005, he attended the College of Naval Warfare where he earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. In January 2007, Captain Ewald reported to Strike Fighter Squadron TWO THIRTEEN as the Executive Officer and assumed command of the BLACKLIONS from May 2008 to August 2009 and deployed aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Following his command tour, he then reported to U.S. Joint Forces Command as Chief, J7 Analysis Division until July 2011. CAPT Ewald recently served as Battle Director of Central Command Combined Air and Space Operations Center, Al Udeid, Qatar.
Captain Ewald's awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, eight Strike/Flight Air Medals in addition to various individual, unit and campaign awards. He has accumulated over 3,900 flight hours and more than 900 carrier arrested landings.
